Volunteering to help!

by M.
(Pakistan)

Not everyone has a helpful bone in their body and not everyone is a kind soul. Only some of us are sympathetic towards the misfortune of our fellow humans. Others believe it's their birth right to be provided with the luxuries and comforts of this world.

In every religion, whether Islam, Buddhism or Christianity, it has been seen that the main focus is on doing good for others, helping people in distress and taking out a part of your own income to support someone else.
If we take a look around us, we can see big, charitable organizations who work day and night to help the unfortunate. They don't get paid a dime, but probably work with more honesty and dedication than any paid employee, any day!

My aunt recently formed a similar kind of non-profit organization by the name of 'Tolerance'. The mission of this forum was to unite everyone for peace and teach people to be tolerant of other's views, religion, traditions, and attitude.

All members pay an annual fee which goes into the treasury and which is then used from time to time, as need be. In addition, the members are always ready to offer every kind of help possible. For instance, just last month, there was an earthquake in a mountainous area of our country. All members of this organization got together, collected donations of needy items like tents, blankets, bedding, medicines, tinned food etc and took the stuff to the affected area within a week.

The only way to collect all these things was to ask and that's what they did. They requested neighbors, school teachers, friends, relatives, colleagues and so on.

The key to successfully run a volunteer organization is to have a wide spread and strong network of friends and helpers who will assist you in time of need. The communication flow should be clear, rapid and frequent. Also, the kind of members you have is very important. Only allow those people to be part of your team, who think and feel like you do.

Like minds are able to work in synergy producing great, unexpected results.
That for me is a non-profit champion.
