Planning Events: Six Easy Steps to Success
Before you begin planning events, make sure the event is worth doing. Events take a great amount of time and energy (especially the first time you do one). Like all investments you make in your organization, it should help you reach your
goals
and fit your
mission.
So before, you begin use the
Mission Meter
to figure out if it’s even worth while. Just because you "have always done it" is not a reason to run an event!
Once you have decided to go ahead, follow these steps: - Form a
team
(yes, you need help). Be sure your team includes members of several constituencies.
- Get the team together and decide what it is you would like to accomplish with this event. Make a list of two or three goals.
- Brainstorm for creative ideas that will help you reach each of your goals.
- Pick a theme. Do this early on – for all events – it gives you a focus and makes choices easier.
- Determine responsibilities and how frequently you will meet to check progress and resolve problems.
- Create a detailed schedule and budget based on input from team members.
