Mission Statments: Samples of Great Ones



Take a look at these Mission Statements. They are well written and seem to convey a clear description of the organization:

  1. Who it exists for
  2. What they are doing for them
  3. What the result will be
  4. How they do it better than anyone else.

These are not all for nonprofits, I choose examples that might be familiar to you. Please, send me yours, I would love to see it. If you like, we will review it.

Example #1
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Example #2 (a little brief, but to the point)
The Nike Mission To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world.
*If you have a body, you are an athlete.

Example #3 (and, long, but good)
Ben & Jerry’s is founded on and dedicated to a sustainable corporate concept of linked prosperity.
Our mission consists of 3 interrelated parts:
Product Mission
To make, distribute & sell the finest quality all natural ice cream & euphoric concoctions with a continued commitment to incorporating wholesome, natural ingredients and promoting business practices that respect the Earth and the Environment.
Economic Mission
To operate the Company on a sustainable financial basis of profitable growth, increasing value for our stakeholders & expanding opportunities for development and career growth for our employees.
Social Mission
To operate the company in a way that actively recognizes the central role that business plays in society by initiating innovative ways to improve the quality of life locally, nationally & internationally.

The mission of The Metropolitan Museum of Art is to collect, preserve, study, exhibit, and stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art that collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement at the highest level of quality, all in the service of the public and in accordance with the highest professional standards.
